No digital screens. No cookie-cutter stamps. Just high-contrast, hands-on ink transfers! Step into the printmaking laboratory and discover how to capture the rich textures of Ketchikan's rainforest and industrial salvage on paper. This course is a deep dive into print mechanics, brayer work, and ink density. Instead of identical runs, students build custom stamps from salvage, roll vibrant gradients, and create original print editions.
The 4-Week Ink Breakdown:
• Week 1: Botanical Monoprints & The Gel Plate: Mastering brayers, ink rolling, and paint density. Students use Gelli plates to capture the physical, intricate patterns of local ferns, leaves, and coastal mosses in multi-layered organic pulls.
• Week 2: Stamp Design & Salvage Carving: Upcycling as a graphic tool. Students design and carve custom, reusable stamps using dense foam sheets, wood blocks, wine corks, and cardboard skeletons, exploring negative space and repeating patterns.
• Week 3: Color Transitions & Registrations: Introducing advanced techniques like the 'rainbow roll' (gradient ink blending) and stencils. Students build a physical registration grid to line up multiple color layers perfectly.
• Week 4: The Final Edition & Portfolio: Working like professional printmakers. Students spend the final week printing a limited edition series on heavy paper or upcycled fabrics, compiling an original zine, or pulling poster runs.
STUDIO TIP FOR PRINTING: Printmaking is highly compatible with salvaged materials! Encourage your students to roll inks over vintage Ketchikan blueprints, old marine charts, or dockwood cuts for stunning, local results.
